Piha Bowling Club ("The Bowler")
Year-round community bowling club at The Domain, where non-members can borrow bowls and play on the green for under ten dollars.
About
The Bowler is the kind of small institution that quietly anchors a place. It sits next to The Domain at 21 Seaview Road, a short walk over the eel bridge from the south end of Piha beach, and it's open all year — which in a village where a lot of things shut for winter is itself worth knowing.
The bowling green is informal and welcoming. Non-members are invited to play; you pay a small green fee (under ten dollars), borrow a set of bowls, and that's it. No membership, no club uniform, no expectation that you've done this before. It's one of the more genuinely Piha things you can do — slow, social, faintly absurd, played on grass next to the Tasman with the bush behind you. A good antidote to a beach day that's running too long, and a good first thing to do after one that's been just right.
The clubhouse is also home to Coastal Beach Diner, so the same trip can resolve into food and a drink without needing to move the car.
Worth knowing: it's a real club, run by people who care about it. Treat it accordingly. Beyond that, you're welcome.
